MRI
Because our primary goal has always been to deliver the highest quality care to our patients,we have an EXTREMITY MRI unit in our office.
Our Extremity MRI unit is dedicated to the study of the extremities and joints utilizing an “open” unit. The patient lies comfortably on an exam table with only the area of concern in the MRI unit. This eliminates any claustrophobia and is more comfortable for the patient than a full body MRI unit. It is also a virtually “silent” unit, eliminating the loud noise of the full body units.
Extremity MRI has been a useful tool for diagnosing early Rheumatoid Arthritis several years earlier than normal xrays. MRI technology can diagnose the disease by imaging early bone erosions that lead to the destruction of the joints and help doctors monitor the response to treatment.
MRI imaging has also given the doctors the opportunity to see soft tissue inflammation, gout, stress fractures, carpal tunnel, Achilles tendonitis, Morton’s neuroma, osteoarthritis, and avascular necrosis of the bone. MRI scans can also detect structural abnormalities in the knees, ankles, and elbows including cartilage changes, meniscus or tendon abnormalities, and much more.
Our MR images are read by a Board Certified Radiologist, fellowship trained in musculoskeletal radiology, to ensure the best treatment decisions for our patients. |

Ultra Sound
North Shore Rheumatology is also able to offer its patients ultrasound exams in the office.
Ultrasound is “real time”, immediate evaluation of a patient’s anatomy with little to no discomfort for the patient. An advantage of Ultrasound is that the patient can point out the symptomatic area to the doctor. or technologist, who can then palpate the area of concern with the external probe, producing an image that will help the doctor to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Ultraound is also used as a guide for needle placement during joint injections and fluid removal.
Because of these 2 imaging modalities, NSR is able to help more patients manage their diseases in a more complete, timely, and appropriate manner. |
